Born in Paris in 1969 into an acting family, Julie Delpy never had any doubts as to her eventual profession. Her film debut came when she was just fifteen, in Jean-Luc Godard's Détective. Other roles with Europe's finest directors followed. In 1986, she appeared (with Juliette Binoche) in the Léos Carax film Mauvais Sang, and in 1990 in Agnieska Holland's internationally acclaimed Europa Europa. The next year, she starred opposite Sam Shepard in Voyager. The late Krzysztof Kieslowski so adored her that he put her in each installment of his Three Colors series: with Juliette Binoche in Blue, with Irene Jacob in Red, and in the leading role in White. In 1994, it was the edgy Killing Zoe, and in 1995, Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, opposite Ethan Hawke. Delpy has three upcoming films, An American Werewolf in Paris, Tykho Moon, and Les Mille merveilles de l'univers.
After several trips to America, Delpy moved to New York in 1990 to study filmmaking at New York University, where she graduated first in her class. Already considered a Hollywood player--she currently lives in L.A--her ambition is to script and direct her own movies. Her first short film, Blah Blah Blah premiered on American television in 1995. She describes it as a "postcard from L.A."
